Subject: Winsock Manual
I hope this isn't a redundant posting - I thought I posted this this
morning but didn't find it this evening.
At any rate, I'm new to the net, SLIP, and computing. I set up Tattam's
Winsock and a number of applications that work fairly well, but I can't find
any documentation for Winsock. Is there any? Are there any FAQ's for this
group?
The problem I get with Winsock, is that it doesn't connect correctly the first
time through. I have to reconnect to get it going. At first this would cause
me to lock up, but I finally discovered that ^[ would abort the script. I had
to fat finger every key on the board to learn that -- I'd really like a manual.
Any help would be appreciated.

Alternatively, include the directory where your mail files are stored at the
end of the command line. For example:
weudora.exe d:\usr\mail

There's a version of traceroute included with WINAPPS.ZIP that's distributed
by the author of Trumpet Winsock. Look for WINAPPS.ZIP and the traceroute
program is called hokchkw.exe.

For SMTP, your computer needs to be connected all the time in order to ensure
mail gets to you in a timely fashion. If your computer is not accepting mail
when a host tries to send it, it will most likely try again every hour
(depends on local configuration and load on the local machine) thereafter for
2-3 days. If you want to get all the messages intended for your computer, you
really want to be on 2-3 hours continuously during prime time since some hosts
may only be on during business hours.
With POP, your Internet provider acts as your post office and holds all of
your mail for you until you retrieve them. Your provider will be available 24
hours a day, 365 days a year, so there's little chance any messages will be
missed or bounced.
For dial-up IP users, POP is preferred and I would not consider an Internet
provider who doesn't also provide POP and NNTP services.

hopchkw.exe
It's not a Winsock client, but will work exclusively over the the
Trumpet Winsock. To get traceroute to work, Peter had to use private
socket options.

Chad,
Eudora will check for an environmental variable EUDORA and place your
mailboxes in the directory specified.
For example:
In AUTOEXEC.BAT:
...
SET EUDORA=C:\MAIL
...
I think you can also force it to use another directory by giving it
as the working directory. I'm not sure because I've not tried that one.
I use the environmental variable approach, and keep the .EXE in another
directory under c:\WINDOWS\EUDORA. Works fine.

Subject: WinVN news reader and sending email replies
I'm running WinVN on Windows for Workgroups 3.11. Every time that I select
the "compose mail" option, my system tries to bring up MS Mail. I can't figure out
what the MS Mail application has to do with sending an email reply over my SLIP connection.
Any thoughts?

Under the Config/Configure Comm menu selection, change the Mail Transport
option from "Auto Select" to "Use SMTP"
That should do it !

Subject: RECV conundrum...
Using MS Daytona beta (mid April), we're getting what we think is
some
unusual behaviour in Recv calls: often we get 'EINPROGRESS'
errors, or
'EWOULDBLOCK' (ie, there's nothing to read).
This seems to make coding for errors from Recv calls a little
tricky: which
errors should we worry about ?
Is this a problem, or am I missing something ?
